Asia Pacific Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics 5th Conference

Just Transition in Regenerative Food Systems under Urbanization and Climate Crisis

March 10-11, 2023
at Nagoya JR Gate Tower  (Aichi, Japan) & Online everywhere

Registration & Program : Anyone interested in the conference, please sign up!

We are pleased to announce that APSAFE2023 will be held, to engage with the appropriate and equitable transition of our food systems, which are in rapid urbanization, a climate emergency, and socio-political conflicts.

Our food system is closely related and deeply affected by social and environmental changes. The various problems that are becoming more serious today are called "wicked problems." Unfortunately, We do not have a panacea. To address these problems, we must pay careful attention and effectively understand the complex and subtle interactions of food system diversity with other systems - economics, industry, culture, health, livelihoods, and nature. APSAFE is one of the promising ways to achieve this.

We cordially welcome producers, distributors, policymakers, community activists, researchers, students, and others interested in food ethics. Let us take this opportunity to clarify the tacit assumptions and knowledge upon which our food system relies and depends, and together cultivate the knowledge and understanding to form a network of commitment that we can all build together.

Conference Topics

APSAFE2023 will address the following sub-themes. However, we also welcome presentations that are not included in these if they are relevant to the conference's overall theme.

1.

Food policies that can integrate diverse stakeholders

Vulnerability of food systems / Justice in the environment, climate, and culture / Pluralism and intersectionality of the roles of players in the food systems / Justice among stakeholders (politics and ethics in distribution and trade, minorities, and indigenous peoples) / Diverse conceptions of food security / consumer-citizen food networks.

2.

Regenerating agricultural pluralism

Correlation between food and culture / Food sovereignty / Right to seed saving / Small-scale experimental agriculture / Dialogue between agrarianism and industrialism.

Planetary health: human-animal-environment health and well-being

Environment as an ecosystem, synergy between rural, urban, and nature / Livestock and breeding as the intersection of life and agriculture / Breeding technology and ethics / Evaluation of livestock well-being / Veterinary ethics.

4.

Urbanization and food systems: concentration and decentralization

Similarities and differences between information and materials / Ethics of logistics / Breaking away from a purely capitalist approach oriented toward agglomeration / Characteristics and valuations of decentralized distribution in the food system, ethical consumption, and transformations of food waste.

5.

Future Foodscapes

Cultural interactions of biotechnology and agroecology  (vertical and urban agriculture, food taboos, veganism, new self-sufficiency) / Food engineering ethics and food culture / "New" foods (e.g., insects, cultured meat, ancient foods) / Ethics of genome editing.

6.

Commoning of water sphere and food procurement

Politics and ethics of marine fisheries and aquaculture / Ecological and human impacts of aquaculture systems / Potential of aquatic-agriculture (seaweed - food, fertilizer, medicine, ecosystem restoration, carbon capture, etc.) / Rights of aquatic species.

7.

Wild food basket: dependence and independence

Caring for what is edible / Sustainability of hunting and gathering /  Livestock-wildlife interactions / Cultural diversity of involvement in the wild / Wild and space for indigenous peoples.

* We welcome abstracts on agricultural and food ethics issues in  Asia-Pacific contexts. Today, food systems are transitioning, driven by new technologies and globalization on the one hand and environmental degradation and the climate crisis on the other. In the meantime, social and health problems flow from the rapid urbanization and the replacement of traditional agriculture and food supply by large-scale modern farming and processed foods. Inevitably, human conflicts exacerbate all of these problems. APSAFE aims to bring these global issues into our context and explore the traditions, futures, concerns, and solutions of agriculture and food in the unique conditions of the Asia-Pacific region.

We cordially welcome researchers, students, policy makers, community activists, and practitioners.
